Donovan Smith

Who is Donovan Smith?

I would say I am an educated but still extremely inquisitive/adventurous person always seeking out new things to learn. I am a lover of truth (what ever form that may take). I am a person that finds interest in almost anything in life. I love to laugh, and I love to make people laugh; and I do that by sometimes tip toeing over a line that many others are afraid to cross.

What is your passion?

I have an ebb and flow as to what is passionate for me. Right now my passion is scuba diving. I recently received my Advanced Diving certification, and I’ve been using it to scour the depths of amazing reefs and wrecks that surround St. Maarten. I hope to travel abroad soon, to maybe Saba, Bonaire, or Costa Rica to continue discovering new things under the sea.

What is your best feature?

I would say my inquisitive nature. I question everything and always search for explanation and truth.

Who are you most like and why?

I’m most like my dad in that we are extremely laid back and level headed in nature. We are both very calm souls, and people tend to go to him or I to serve as mediators.

What do you think about natural hair?

Women’s natural hair, if its cared for properly, can be extremely beautiful. That said, I do acknowledge it can be more difficult to manage. I don’t know if this is intrinsic in nature or if its because of the current state of the beauty hair industry that tends to not concern itself too much with natural hair.

How do you feel about the natural hair movement (pros and cons)?

I feel like its a great thing for people to embrace their natural characteristics. I don’t think anything is wrong with wigs, weaves or other do’s, but with the media’s push against black women with natural hair, I find myself having a great deal of respect for people who take that journey.

How do you feel about your hair?

My hair is in an interesting state right now. I found I have a nice curl pattern, and in its current state, the upkeep is super easy. I like how my current hairstyle makes me look completely different than any other stage in my life, but I’m not content. I want to try something new in the near future.

Did you have a “hair journey”? If so, describe it.

I used to have short hair with waves for years and at the end of 2015 I decided I wanted to look different. I didn’t have a goal in mind, I just went to my barber and asked him for a suggestion, and his answer was literally “Sky’s the limit”. I took that to heart and started letting my hair grow out. It has now been about a year since the last time I cut my hair short, and its longer than I have ever had it before. It’s in an interesting state, because I’m not sure if I want to take the step into locking it or if I want to cut it short again or just change it to a different type of curl pattern.

So you see a confident woman with natural hair, what are you thinking?

If its well done, I think “Oh nice! Cool do! Mad respect!”

Who is your ideal Naturalista? Why?

Espranza Spalding – She is one of the most talented singers/musicians alive today. This is the person who beat out Justin Bieber for best new artist at the Grammys. Amazing personality and she’s just so naturally gorgeous as well 😀. So I have an immense admiration for her character and talent.

Are you a romantic? What’s the most romantic gesture you’ve ever done?

I don’t consider myself particularly romantic. The most romantic gesture would be when I surprised someone with a sunset homemade picnic/dinner with wine on the beach.

What’s your message to the Naturalistas?

I have a huge amount of respect for all the Naturalistas. Going against the grain isn’t easy. You guys should continue trying to share your knowledge so that other women may know that they don’t necessarily have to conform to Hollywood standards in order to be beautiful.

What’s your message to the fellas who are dating/married to Naturalistas?

Don’t take her for granted. In my opinion a woman who is confident in her own natural beauty is a rare/amazing thing to behold.
